Gavin Atkin, medical writer

Freelance medical writer and journalist

Medical writer and journalist

An experienced and capable medical writer, health journalist and magazine editor, I can offer freelance reporting and writing, promotional copywriting, project planning, commissioning and editing, proposal development, press releases, clinical articles, backgrounders and books.

I’m probably one of the most experienced freelance medical journalists available in the UK: until autumn 2006 I edited the GP journal The Practitioner for many years, and before that worked on the GP newspaper Pulse. I also have useful in-house and agency public relations experience and understand the needs of executives working in PR and marketing.

As you would expect of a clinical writer with a background in primary care, my specialist topics are the classic chronic disease areas, including cardiovascular medicine, diabetes, respiratory medicine and smoking cessation, dermatology, gastroenterology, rheumatology and psychiatry. I also write regularly on topics in pharmaceutical marketing.

If it’s needed, I’m computer savvy too. I can sub using Quark Xpress running on a Macintosh, set up a great weblog on any subject or hunt down a hard-to-find author.

Clients? In addition to working for various PR agencies and magazines, I’m part-time clinical and CPD editor at the pharmacy magazine Chemist+Druggist, and a regular author for the pharmaceutical industry newspaper Pharmafocus and the pharmacy counter assistant’s monthly magazine OTC.

If you or someone you work with might find a capable, experienced medical writer, journalist and editor useful, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I can be reached by email at gmatkin@gmail.com or by phone at +44 7985 522734 and +44 1622 832871.

Hypnotherapy Download Helps Cannabis Addicts Quit.

As the Government makes a decision whether to change the legal classification of cannabis in April, Clearhead, the website for cannabis smokers wanting information and support to stop using the drug announce the release of a hypnotherapy recording available as a download to help quitters through the withdrawal process.

James Langton, a recovered cannabis addict, who founded the website three years ago said, ‘When I quit, there was very little acknowledgement that cannabis could be addictive. Today, only a few deny the existence of cannabis dependency and it is generally recognised by the medical profession and drug treatment agencies.

Many people find it very hard to quit, partly because so often cannabis smokers start at a relatively young age and a psychological dependence can build up quickly, but also hard core users find it difficult to adjust to natural relaxation and good sleep habits easily, as the active ingredients of cannabis take up to six weeks to leave the body. Our hypnotherapy recording seems to ease the physical discomfort using highly effective relaxation techniques coupled with therapeutic messages appealing to the subconscious by questioning the use of cannabis.’

The recording was made for Clearhead by West London based hypnotherapist and NLP master practitioner Angela Jullings who comments ‘I have found that hypnotherapy works particularly well helping people with their cannabis issues. Often I work with those suffering from debilitating anxiety or a lack of confidence and it’s surprising how many of them are regular cannabis smokers struggling to control their habit. When James approached me to produce this recording, a download seemed like a discreet and convenient way to help with the withdrawal process.’

Langton has also written the book No Need For Weed Understanding And Breaking Cannabis Addiction £9.95 published by Hindsight Press on April 21st
